These are some
sketches I made to visualize how was the cockpit layout of some
of my favourite airplanes. This way, I can have an idea of wich
instruments I should include, their disposition and how much of
the cockpit tub will be visible once the model is completed. As
Harry Woodman said once, a little of imagination can be added if
you don't have the slightest idea of how a determined airplane
would look like.
- Fokker
E.V/D.VIII cockpit, port side. Note that some items
were ommited for clarity, as the wire linkage from
controls to ailerons or the machine guns. Note that the
control column should protrude trough the belly of the
fuselage. My references were Lee
Mensinger's photos and the Fokker D.VIII datafile.
- Fokker
E.V/D.VIII cockpit, starboard side. You can add a
little square map pouch made of leather, hanging from the
upper longeron.
- Fokkergriff,
a special handle for the control column designed by the
Fokker engineering team and used in many airplanes,
included the Fokker Dr1 and DVIII. Note the throttle
lever incorporated to the left of the handle.
- Roland
D.VI cockpit, showing the characteristic planking of
the fuselage. If you have any doubt on how this would
have looked, go to the nearest rowing club and check the
racing boats made with the same system.
